A recent large-scale study has highlighted a significant connection between what we eat and our mental well-being. The research, which included thousands of participants, found that individuals who consumed higher amounts of ultra-processed foods—such as fast food, packaged snacks, and sugary products—were over 20% more likely to experience anxiety and more than 40% more likely to suffer from depression.


Dr. Ziegler explains that this happens due to the neuroinflammation caused by such foods. "When you eat ultra-processed foods, it can lead to inflammation, particularly neuroinflammation, which affects mood, motivation, memory, and even your ability to think clearly," she said.

To combat this, the study recommends adopting the Mediterranean diet, which has long been praised for its health benefits. This diet, rich in nuts, seeds, healthy oils, omega-3-rich fish, and limited red meat, is known to reduce inflammation and improve both emotional and cognitive health.

Dr. Ziegler also encourages people to minimize foods that trigger inflammation. This includes fried foods, packaged products, and items high in sugar. "Even things we often consider as simple snacks, like bread, crackers, and cookies, can be ultra-processed," she added.
